Announcements

  • Congratulations to Bob Koca , our Second-Half 2007 Point Race Champion!

  • Next tournament is on Sunday, April 27, starting at 12:30 pm. Registration closes at 12:15 pm.

  • If you would like to receive an e-mail reminder a few days before each tournament, , including your e-mail address and, optionally, your name, and I will put you on the list.

All tournaments are on Sundays and begin at noon. Tournaments use an elimination format that is either true double-elimination or single elimination with consolation bracket, depending on the number of players. Tournament entry fee is $20 with 100% payout. In addition, there is an optional $20 side pool. The side pool provides 100% payout, according to the following rules:

  • For fields of 9 or more, the side pool goes to the side pool participant who advances furthest in the main bracket, provided he or she advances at least to the main bracket final match. If neither of the main bracket finalists in a field of 9 or more is in the side pool, then the side pool goes to the side pool participant who advances furthest in the consolation bracket.
  • For fields of 7 or 8, if the main bracket winner is in the side pool, he or she receives the side pool. Otherwise, the side pool is awarded to the side pool participant who advances furthest in the consolation bracket.
  • For fields of 6 or less, the no-loss (7 pt. match) bracket and the one-loss (5 pt. match) bracket are considered a single bracket for purposes of the side pool, so the side pool is awarded to the side pool participant who advances furthest.

  • 2008 tournament results

  • First round starts promptly at 12:30. Depending on the bracket format, which is dependent on the number of players, if the bracket is not full then latecomers may be able to enter, although with penalty points as per our late policy. And there is no guarantee, so please arrive in time.

Club Information

Who

Anyone is welcome to play at a club tournament. There are no club membership dues to pay. Simply pay the entry fee (and optionally, the side pool fee) when you play. Whether you play at every single tournament, or once a month, or once a year, or even just once a decade, you are welcome!

Players of all ages and skill levels are welcome. We have just one bracket, and there are strong players at the club. If you are relatively new to the game, do not be afraid to try your luck at a tournament. There's enough luck in the game that you can still win! And, more importantly, most of our experienced players are interested in helping new players to increase their skill level. All players are guaranteed two matches, so the $20 entry fee can be thought of by the novice or intermediate player as a relatively inexpensive lesson.

What

All tournaments are an elimination-format. Tournament entry fee is $20. 100% of entry fees are paid out. In addition, there is an optional $20 side pool with 100% payout (split as necessary) to the side-pool participant(s) who advances furthest in the main bracket, provided he or she advances at least to the main bracket final match. If neither of the main bracket finalists are in the side pool, the side pool is paid to the side pool participant who advances furthest in the consolation bracket..

Our tournaments use U.S. Backgammon Tournament Rules and Procedures with the exception of Rule 6.3 regarding appeals. (It is just not practical at a small local tournament to convene an appeals committee. It is an extremely rare occurence at the club when a dispute requiring a director's ruling is not resolved quickly and amicably).

When

We usually meet the second and fourth Sunday of each month, but there are exceptions, so check the schedule. All tournaments begin at 12:30. Tournaments are usually over between 5:00 and 6:00.

Where

Tournaments are held at O'Malley's Irish Sports Pub in the Crown Plaza Hotel TYSONS CORNER - MCLEAN at 1960 Chain Bridge Road, Mclean, VA 22101. The pub is not open until noon, so we will take registrations until 12:15 and begin play at 12:30.

Please, give yourself some extra time for finding the hotel if you are not familiar with the location. It can be tricky getting to the hotel off of the main roads. Although the hotel is on the corner of Va. Route 123 and International Drive, it is not directly accessible from either road. The easiest way from Rt. 123 South from the Beltway is to turn right onto International Drive, then left on Greensboro Drive, and then take the first left into the hotel parking lots. O'Malley's in in the Crowne Plaza, and you can enter directly from the back parking lot. There are a bunch of picnic tables outside you can see.
